The publisher's synopsis really doesn't do this story proper justice. Jacob's writing style is akin to the wry, cynically dark storytelling of Henry Rollins, Patton Oswalt and Tim Minchkin. There is a coming-of-age story in here, but it is merely the wraparound for a hilariously blunt and self-effacing observational narrative which is instantly relatable. His gift for describing everyday moments with uncomfortable honesty is endearing. This is the kind of book that you read with a highlighter pen. I hve read several pages aloud to friends and had them rolling or covering their mouths in shock. It was a fantastic trip through this book.

Please give us a sequel.

I really enjoyed it. It captured growing up in Sumter very well. I can't wait for Jacob's next work !
Loved it!! I really enjoyed it. I couldn't wait to see how Jake would handle each challenge that he faced and was ready for whatever was to follow. Definitely laughed out loud more than once too!!
Jacob captured the essence of growing up in a not so perfect body in a not so perfect society. His descriptions were vivid enough to bring me back to my own adolescence. Thank you.
I could not put this book down. McMaster-Bigum shows a lot of promos in his first novel. I cannot wait until his next novel. I would recommend this book if you like to read.
Jacob's teenage narratives range from cringe-worthy to endearing, but he tells his stories with such honesty and humor that it's hard to do anything but laugh until your face hurts. )
This is a real, honest, coming-of-age story that most of us can relate to. McMaster-Bigum shows how the awkward tween and teen years are filled with difficult family/friend/school relationships, but does this with humor. Great first novel for this new author. I'll be looking for his next book.
I finished this book within one day! From the first chapter, I was compelled to keep reading and became engrossed in this witty coming-of-age story. The main character is humorous and endearing, developing throughout. The story is rich with language that draws you in, bringing you into the scene. Anyone who has lived through adolescence will resonate with this novel. Highly recommend this read.
