All of Alger's juvenile novels share essentially the same theme, known as the "Horatio Alger myth" a teenage boy works hard to escape poverty. Often it is not hard work that rescues the boy from his fate but rather some extraordinary act of bravery or honesty. This 1868 novel is a sequel to Ragged Dick, Or, Street Life in New York with the Boot-Blacks. However, you don't have to have read that first to enjoy this book, as Alger quickly fills the reader in on all necessary plot points and recurring characters.Richard (formerly Dick) hopes to leave his past as a poor bootblack behind and enter the "'spectable" life as a young clerk. However, enemies from the past (and new enemies won by his saucy tongue) conspire in an attempt to drag him down with false accusations. Despite the moralistic tone of this tale, Richard's sharp tongue keeps things from getting too sugary sweet. It's up to Richard's friends, including his dependable (but kind of stick-in-the-mud) roommate Fosdick, to help him overcome the frame-up.
Overall the story and the characters make this a fun Alger tale - it's formulaic, sure, but it's got the spark of life that some of his other work lacks. The "bad guys" in particular are fun reading and there are enough "slice-of-1868" moments here to make it interesting from a historical point of view as well.

Dick moves up in life. Making more money and further educating himself is just the beginning. It would seem he has a lot of luck, but it's his great personality and honest heart of true forgiveness that makes him a gentleman.
A nice artifact, some old school self-help in narrative form. Easy to read. Well adapted to the kindle format.
The quality of this book is very poor. The font is very small and the print is very light, making it impossible to read. The one star rating doesn't reflect the content of the book. Do not purchase unless you want to strain your eyes.
Enjoyed the continued events of our hero Dick Hunter who overcomes life's challenges and setbacks with an innate sense of goodness and humor. A great example for young and old alike.
I so enjoyed the Ragged Dick books. What wonderful characters! It made me feel like I was right there with all of them, specially wit Dick.
Horatio Alger wrote most of his material around the turn of the last century. If you have a youn man or woman in your house, I would definitely recommend they read these books. The books are all about the original work ethic that made this country great. Work hard, save money, study, make something of your self. It is the "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" mentality. It worked then and it still works today.
I can not spoil the fun. so all I may say is this is an awesome read. Inspiring us to good morals as we read of the fortunes of Ragged Dick... his upward climb for a fame, fortune, and a 'specteble (respectable) name. The unseen twist at the end with 'Mickey' (Dick's opponent) was especially cool. absolutely loved this story and I can not wait to read about the boy that Dick (Richard) helps in the next book.
